Creating the missing viable alternative to economic euthanasia

In Canada, medical assessors are mandated to refer viable alternatives before approving voluntary euthanasia (MAiD) applicants. One does not exist for economic euthanasia.

We're changing that.

Who We Are

Right to Live is a nationally registered, Canadian start-up non-profit corporation that is developing the infrastructure to offer the missing referable viable alternative. Canada's voluntary euthanasia program, Medical Assistance in Dying, relies on a safeguard system where two independent medical assessors are mandated to refer what is termed 'viable alternatives'. Without such a resource, the applicants suffering may be deemed 'irremediable' and fulfill eligibility for MAiD. This is the official junction for intervention before euthanasia. Right now, there does not exist a specific resource for those who would prefer another option but cannot afford it. We're seeking to change that by developing a system to deliver exactly that.

The Problem

Right now, Medical Assistance in Dying exists in a vacuum. The system was originally designed such that two independent medical assessors, of at least registered nurse or higher medical qualification, could refer other 'viable alternatives' for a problem that was conceived to only be medical. Other treatment options was the implied spectrum of possibilities, and thus the medical qualification for the professional assessing and referring. However, when the problem is economic, a medical professional lacks a specific resource to refer.

Meet Sophia. She was a 51-year old woman living with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in community social housing. The shared HVAC system circulated chemical vapours from other units that triggered her condition, leaving her suffering. After two years of fruitlessly searching for alternative housing that would be affordable on her meagre provincial monthly disability support, and reaching out to organizations, news and the government, she applied for MAiD. Her physicians wrote to the government requesting assistance as her disability qualified her for MAiD, despite the origin of her request being housing.

She passed away from MAiD on February 2, 2022.

Our Solution

In our 'Social Brokerage' business model, a client sits down with one of our case agents and develops a solution proposal for the specific issues driving their MAiD request. After review, this proposal is matched with social impact capital that the brokerage sources from the global market, then executed. Upon completion, the capital providers receive an anonymized impact report that represents a unit of social impact similar to a carbon credit representing impact in the global carbon dioxide system.

Scale-Up

Followed by a founding capital raise, we will recruit the core operational staff, finalize preparation for a pilot run, then proceed to do a trial series of three cases. Following a review of the results, we intend to transition to regular operations and scale-up towards a goal of providing viable alternatives to all possible MAiD cases.
